Certainty

EverHigher71

A common misconception of the definition of “faith” is that it’s blind belief for no reason. Faith isn’t rationalized, but without it, sound reasoning is impossible. That may seem to be a bold statement, but read on to understand.

Rationalization is a mental process by which insane thinking is made to appear sane. It gives the illusion of sound reasoning when the reasoning is irrational. Rationalization works using two methods: axiomatic thinking and smokescreens.

The first method is axiomatic thinking, simply making stuff up. Assumptions are merely fabrications that were made up and then treated as if they were part of reality. Unsupported assertions are concepts that are claimed true when there’s no certainty that they’re true. Axioms are unsupported assertions that are claimed true just because they’re claimed true. Lies are claims that aren’t true. Assumptions are lies in that they pretend the assumption is known when the assumption is, in fact, not known. It’s a lie to imply that an assumption is true. All assumptions are unknown. All of these fallacies fall under the heading of axiomatic thinking fallacies. On one or both sides of every debate, you will find axiomatic thinking.

The second method of rationalization is to try to make the made-up stuff seem to be real. It’s the art of making fake things look real. There are many methods that are used to do this. Some of them are simple and others are very complex. Usually, several methods are nested together, so these methods become very confusing and deceiving. Examples would include statistical tricks, circular reasoning, infinite regression, equivocation, ad hominem thinking, and appeals to human authorities, popularity, fear, emotion, ridicule, or any other thing that gives the illusion that the made-up stuff is true. Hundreds of logical fallacies are used as smokescreens to hide axiomatic thinking fallacies.

Those are the two elements of rationalization: axiomatic thinking and smokescreens. Rationalization is making believe. Whenever we rationalize, and we all do it sometimes, we lose the ability to tell the difference between reality and make-believe for that time and situation. We lose the ability to tell the difference between substance and concept. We lose the ability to tell the difference between what exists and what is theory. Scientific theories are concepts. Some scientists become so irrational that they claim that scientific theories are facts. They do this by rationalization.

When God speaks to us about faith, He isn’t talking about rationalization. Rationalized belief is worthless.

We don’t make ourselves believe in God. That would be make-believe. We don’t believe in spite of the evidence. God has revealed that the faith is the evidence, and the word, “evidence,” in this sense, means absolute certainty and absolute proof.

Now faith is the substance (as opposed to concept) of things hoped for, the evidence (absolutely certain proof) of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)

Consider the nature of sound reasoning. Sound logic requires proof. The proof must prove what is claimed. The conclusion is what is claimed. The premise is the proof. The premise must be true.

How do you prove a premise true?

Do you declare it to be an axiom? That’s the axiomatic fallacy. Do you try to prove it with another premise that you can’t prove? That’s the infinite regression fallacy. Do you use circular reasoning? That’s a fallacy, and it proves nothing. There’s only one way to have a true premise.

When God reveals something, then it’s known. It’s true. God reveals things through Scripture, through Creation, and through the moving of the Holy Spirit. God reveals, but we need to acknowledge Him. He does reveal things even to those who refuse to acknowledge Him. Otherwise, all Secularists and Naturalistic Christians would die quite quickly. He supplies what they need to live so that they will have a chance to turn to Him and find Him.

Every person who is actually following Christ is led and taught by the Holy Spirit moment by moment. There are no exceptions to this. They see His Hand working in the Creation. They see His Hand working in others who are following Christ. They hear His Voice in Scripture, in Creation, in their innermost awareness of His Presence, and in any other person who’s speaking by the Holy Spirit. They are learning to hear Him more clearly and to discern between His Voice and every other Voice. As they walk in His Presence and see His glory, they are being changed into the same image from glory to glory by the Spirit of the Lord. They are dying to the flesh and being formed into the new Man. Christ is living in them and becoming stronger and more fully formed. The flesh is losing its hold on them, and the deceptive carnal mind is losing its grip. God has provided an arsenal of weapons for Christ’s followers to make it possible for everyone who is willing to eventually come to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. What a day that will be!

Secularists and Naturalists, on the other hand, have no way to know the difference between what they make up and what God reveals. Within their worldview, they refuse to acknowledge God as He reveals Himself and His truth to them. They take some of the practical knowledge that God gives them, but they claim that it’s conceptual, just like all the things they make up. They reject much of the truth that God gives. Eventually, God turns them over to their own reprobate minds. Their own reprobate minds destroy them. They can’t tell the difference between reality and make-believe. The axiomatic thinking of the Secularist or Naturalist can’t be proven. Axiomatic thinking is the means by which the Secularist or Naturalist interprets his or her observations or experiences (experiments). No Secularist or Naturalist can have certainty that his or her assumptions, unsupported assertions, or axioms are true. However, any Secularist or Naturalist can confirm God. Any one of them can seek God in sincerity and respect and come to know Him through Jesus Christ. All such people need do is confess that they haven’t properly respected God, obeyed Him, or acknowledged Him, and ask Jesus Christ to forgive them and reveal His will and His Person, while willingly submitting themselves to the leadership and rule of Christ. You can see the contrast, can’t you? One can be confirmed. All who seek Him find Him. The other can never be confirmed.

Unfortunately, if we, as Christians lean on our own minds to understand rather than acknowledging the presence and leading of God, we can’t tell the difference between reality and make-believe either. We would no longer be walking by faith but we would be walking by human opinion and interpretation of observation, experience, and philosophy. This happens.

Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Some theologians have assumed that “the word of God” is the same as “the Bible.” However, that isn’t what’s written. If we go into the original language, we find no “the.” We find the Greek word, “rhema,” which means “Utterance.” So, this verse literally says that faith comes by hearing and hearing comes by Utterance of God. God speaks through the Bible. Through the Bible, God says that He also speaks many other ways, and all those ways will be consistent with what He is saying through the Bible.

Interpreting Scripture using assumptions is no better than interpreting Creation using assumptions. When scientists lean on human understanding rather than God, they interpret their observations and experiences (experiments) through the filter of their various worldviews. Often, a groupthink worldview is applied among an entire group of scientists. When this happens, the Holy Spirit won’t force Himself on them. They make up all kinds of stories that later must be changed. The same thing happens among theologians. A great leader and popular theologian can cause problems for generations that follow their speculations.

However, in Christ, we have a sure Leader. We have One Whom we can trust. If we all keep seeking Him and His righteousness, we will be found faithful. He will restore the order of the Body of Christ. He will restore the authority and the power. He will restore the Scriptural offices, ministries, and gifts. Despise not the day of small beginnings. God is now working throughout the Earth.

God speaks. He leads. He teaches. We acknowledge and faith comes. We don’t make-believe that God exists. We hear His Voice. We respond with respect and submission. Faith give us access to grace. Grace does God’s Works through us. We can actually become His Hand extended, reaching out to the oppressed.

Ever Higher In Christ Jesus

EverHigher3

There’s a difference between presupposition and what is empirical. The word, “empirical,” means “by experience.” You see, every person who follows Christ is led and taught by the Holy Spirit moment by moment. That’s my experience, too. We all experience His Divine revelation as it’s imparted. However, without Christ and His revelation, no one can ever truly know the difference between reality and make-believe. It’s not that God doesn’t reveal truth to them. He does or they would quickly die. But the Münchausen trilemma makes them process all thoughts by lumping revelation with presupposition, simply because they refuse to acknowledge God or to be thankful to Him. For this reason, the contrast in thinking is between made-up stuff and Divine revelation. People can, of course, deny Divine revelation. That is a universal negative fallacy based on nothing but an unsupported assertion. You can see the problem with Secularist thinking, can’t you?

Now, God speaks through Scripture and every method mentioned in Scripture. Satan and the human mind work together with counterfeits of everything real that God uses to bring us to His good purpose. How can we avoid being deceived. Here’s the way. Know Him. Whoever seeks Him finds Him. The Father knows how to give good gifts to His children. If you’re looking for a spiritual experience, that’s what you’ll get. However, if you are looking for Christ and His righteousness, then you’ll be satisfied. You’ll receive the Spirit of Christ from the Father.

Most, if not all, of us end up on both sides of this equation. We are impure. We don’t fully desire God’s will. We all have a fleshly nature. The flesh desires comfort, money, power, ecclesiastical success, recognition, respect, honor, prestige, glory, pleasure, independence, and many other things rather than desiring God’s will. The Christ nature, Christ in us, the hope of glory, desires God’s will. Each of us must turn our will toward Christ rather than toward our fleshly nature and our carnal mind. Then, we will be able to seek first the Kingdom of God. That will assure that our hearts will be prepared to hear God’s Voice and to respond in submission.

To be sure, this isn’t an instant fix. God describes it as an experience that goes from glory to glory. As we all with open face, beholding as in a glass, the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. There is a veil that is naturally in front of our faces. That veil is the fleshly nature. We must deny it and look into the glass, that mirror, and see the glory of the Lord. Then, we are changed into the same image. He shows us who we are in Him. We see how we fit into the Body of Christ. We see what He is leading us in right at the moment. We’re learning to see better as the flesh dies away. The flesh dies away in the presence of the Holy Spirit. The flesh dies away as we yield the members of our Body to His free gift of righteousness. The very thing that kills the flesh is also building up the Christ and making us alive to Christ. In this way, we make progress moment by moment as we are led by the Holy Spirit and as we yield ourselves to Him in willing submission.

As we become familiar with Christ, we begin to notice differences between self-confidence and the certainty that we call “faith.” We immediately notice the difference between God’s Voice and the demonic voices, but we also begin to discern between human voices and the Divine. We hear the Holy Spirit bringing Scripture to our remembrance to refute the lies of our own minds or the minds of others. We also begin to recognize the difference between the Peace that Jesus gives and the peace that the world, the human mind, the human flesh, or the deceiver gives. ?This is how discernment is imparted and how we are changed.

How Does God Say Scripture is Interpreted?

WhichChurchDoesGodTeach

Some people say, “Scripture interprets Scripture.” It might be more accurate to state that the Holy Spirit may clarify one verse of Scripture with another verse of Scripture.

God says something through Scripture about the human mind. The human heart (mind) is deceitful and desperately wicked. It can’t be trusted to interpret Scripture. We aren’t supposed to speak a vision out of our own heart. We aren’t supposed to add to Scripture or diminish it. Interpretation adds interpretation to Scripture. Scripture must be spiritually discerned. Spiritual discernment comes from the Holy Spirit. Are we each supposed to interpret Scripture independently, or does God have a pattern for unity of the Body of Christ?

Scripture is the most authoritative means through which Christ speaks. However, different Christians interpret Scripture differently, each one claiming to have the truth. Theologies of major organizations are not consistent. Interpretations of the Bible vary. There are two problems. Many Christians trust the human mind to analyze Scripture. Others believe that the Almighty God is able to reveal the interpretation. Among both groups, there are huge divisions. On the rationalist side, each group asserts that it is properly interpreting Scripture and teaching it correctly and all the other groups are wrong. Among those who seek God for revelation, you would expect unity. Yet there are obviously some who think that they’re receiving revelation when they aren’t. If they were all receiving revelation, then they would all be teaching the same things.

We can eliminate those who are depending on the fallen human mind rather than depending on God. There’s a philosophy known as “rationalism.” In this philosophy, it’s believed that the human mind can manufacture knowledge without the benefit of either revelation or observation. There isn’t any evidence to show that rationalism works, but there’s a lot of evidence to show that it doesn’t work. In fact, logic requires a true premise that proves a conclusion true. Sound logic cannot be based on any assumptions at all.  It’s impossible to prove a premise true unless that premise is Divine revelation. Rationalizing a premise is irrational. Using assumptions to establish a premise is irrational. When you go to prove a premise, how would you do it? You would need another premise. How would you prove that premise? With another premise you can’t prove? You can understand the problem. The human mind is hopelessly weak without Divine revelation. There seems to be no awareness of the problem among those who are looking at their own worldviews and not at Scripture at all. They add to Scripture and diminish Scripture with each statement, yet, they think they are merely paraphrasing Scripture or even quoting it.

Most theologies don’t even consider the possibility of asking God what He thinks and waiting for His answer. Even with Divine revelation, the mind is only able to receive it and submit to it. And, even with Divine revelation, we can be fooled by our own carnal minds that disguise our own ideas and makes them appear to us as coming from God. Most don’t consider that even what He does, in fact, reveal is partial, and He wants to reveal greater depth of understanding. Adding to this problem, throughout time there have been false teachers and false prophets. Today, this is still a problem, and much of it is driven by money, power, or prestige.

Does God have a pattern for receiving the correct interpretation that He has revealed through Scripture? Yes. God has a pattern in Scripture to keep the revelation pure. God speaks through Scripture about His pattern for His Church. Just as God doesn’t want His pattern for marriage perverted, He doesn’t want His pattern for the Church perverted. The situation isn’t hopeless. God is restoring. He will complete the process.

Search the Scripture. Ask God to show you how the government of the Church is supposed to work. What are the offices that are set to receive the interpretation of Scripture with authority? How are they set into office? Do they call themselves? Are they set by the will of mankind or popular vote? Can humanity self-generate these offices and this order, or must God move to instigate this. There are many who are claiming authority today. If there is any authority, and you seek God and wait on God, He will direct you in finding this pattern and He will direct you to some level of authority and order.

Sin Violates Love

EveryViolation

This subject confuses Christians. God clarifies this through Scripture, and yet Christians are confused. The purpose of this post is to try to set things straight. Love is tied to reason in that sin makes us callous to God. Love fulfills the Law. Sin is breaking the Law. When we’re callous toward God, discernment decreases. Without discernment, it’s impossible to tell the difference between reality and make-believe. Submission to the Holy Spirit will result in increasing discernment from glory to glory even as by the Spirit of the Lord. It results in a mind that is made new, as Romans 12:1-2 mentions.

There are two main distortions of God’s love among Christians. One tries to self-generate love. This is equivalent to trying to self-generate God. It is also equivalent to trying to self-generate righteousness. Self-righteousness frustrates the grace of God. God gives His grace, His free gift of righteousness. When we jump in and try to help, we defile His righteousness with our fleshly efforts. We start with extra-biblical forms, rituals, doctrines, laws, rules, and that sort of thing. We go on to try to do great works for God. We speak visions out of our own hearts (innermost minds). We show contempt for anyone who won’t go along with our foolishness. I say, “we,” because I’m just as guilty. May the Holy Spirit deliver us both.

The second distortion is the target of this meme. There is the notion that “God is love, so God doesn’t care what we do.” It’s the notion that “a loving God doesn’t mind sexual sin, covetousness, stealing, or any other sin that people think will make them happy.” Sometimes, sex outside of marriage is given the false label of “love.” God created sex holy for a specific relationship in a specific order that’s fully defined in Scripture. Distorting sex in any way is not love. It’s the lack of love. When a man and woman violate this by sexual thoughts, speech, or action outside of a life-long commitment of marriage between one man and one woman, it’s not love. It’s the absence of love. It’s spiritual wickedness that enslaves them to Satan. It destroys the order of the home as God designed it. The order of the home is the basic unit of the Church, so it hurts the Church. It’s very destructive. It even destroys countries and societies. The sins people think will make them happy only make them addicted to those sins. They become increasingly ensnared and enslaved. They lose the ability to know the difference between right and wrong. They can’t tell the difference between reality and make-believe. They can’t reason or sense the Holy Spirit’s leading any more. Sin brings death and judgment. Salvation is salvation from sin and to righteousness.

“Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.” 1 John 3:7

Notice that He warns us not to allow anyone to deceive us. The reason that God warns us in this way is because someone is going to try to deceive us. Imputed righteousness is real righteousness. It’s God thinking His thoughts, speaking His Utterances, and doing His Works through you by His Grace, which is accessed through real Faith, which comes to us as we hear His Voice and yield ourselves to Him. That’s what righteousness is.

Righteousness is walking on the Path or the Way. Christ is the Way. He speaks the Truth to us, which He is. When we walk in the Way, we are walking in the Life of the coming Age, a Life which He is. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Truth is reality. It’s what’s really real.

We walk in this way by hearing and acknowledging the leading of Christ. We can’t self-generate righteousness, but we can will to do His Will rather than our own wills or the wills of other people or the wills of demons. There are many who would like to lead us, including our own minds. Christ may speak through other Christians to lead us. God speaks of that in 1 Corinthians 12. He says that God isn’t like an idol that’s incapable of articulate speech. He’s not dumb, unable to talk. Then, He says that no person can call Jesus accursed by the Holy Spirit and no one can say that Jesus is Lord without the Holy Spirit. Then, He goes on to name the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit that make Christ visible in His Body of believers. In other Scripture, He explains how those gifts are imparted by the laying on of hands and prophecy of the presbytery.

Sin is stepping or slipping off of this way. Sin is listening to our own leading, turning our will inward toward our own fleshly minds or generating visions out of our own hearts. Sin is listening to those who aren’t speaking by the Spirit of God, ungodly counselors or Christians who are following their own intellects. Sin is listening to the leading of demonic powers by exposing ourselves to that which is filthy, violent, or sensual. This may be conversations where we try to fit in with the ungodly. This may be various forms of media, magazines at the checkout counter, Internet images, TV shows that are increasingly violent and increasingly promote perversions of sex. It includes every misrepresentation of the Good News about what Jesus Christ is doing in and through His Church.

Fabricated Science

ScienceMadeUp

When assumptions are the basis of thought, the best you can have is opinion. A Secularist refuses to acknowledge God, so this rules out acknowledging Divine revelation. Yet, God is good and doesn’t allow all Secularists to die. God preserves them to allow them time to find Him. God reveals many things to Secularists, including the fact that He exists and that He judges evil,  for instance. Secularists know, by Divine revelation, many things about good and evil. Yet, several differences exist between the way a Secularist reacts to Divine revelation and the way that a follower of Christ reacts to Divine revelation. While someone who is following Christ will acknowledge Christ as the source of all knowledge, the Secularist will assume that he or she has somehow deduced this knowledge through observation and take the glory for himself or herself. The person following Christ has the possibility to learning to discern the difference between that which his or her own mind fabricates and that which God reveals. The Secularist rejects God. Therefore, the Secularist believes that every interpretation of reality is based on human intellect. Interpretation adds to what can be observed, what God has revealed. For this reason, a Secularist can’t tell the difference between reality and fantasy.

I’m referring to made-up stuff as fantasy, since that’s what it is. Assumptions are fantasy. Bare assertions are fantasy. Circular reasoning is just a way to hide bare assertions, which are fantasy. False bravado is a way to hide bare assertions. Message control, which is carefully practiced on university campuses and among the scientific hierarchy, is a way to keep bare assertions from being exposed as being bare assertions. In fact, all logical fallacies are either some form of making stuff up or else they are ways to hide the fact that what’s being presented as “fact” is simply made-up stuff.

Consider a Secularist finding a fossil. The Secularist thinks of all the things that Secularist has learned about the rocks around the fossils and the age of the Earth and stories about molecules turning into people over time. The Secularist thinks that these are all facts. He or she was taught them as if they were facts. However, these so-called “facts” were derived using the same process that I’m about to define. If you think about this, it’s the way that most people try to reason.

Then, the Secularist tries to derive new learning from the fossil. The Secularist examines the fossil and comes to one or more conclusions about the fossil. The process is, “I am seeing this fossil and I observe [insert whatever the Secularist observes]. Therefore, [insert whatever the Secularist decides based on the Secularist’s worldview, a worldview based on all the previous learning that was based on the same kind of thinking].

The Secularist observes A. Then, the Secularist says that A means B. How does the Secularist know that A means B? Well, A means B because C is true. How does the Secularist know that C is true? C is true because of D. How does the Secularist know that D is true? Because of E, of course. This process goes on infinitely. There’s no way for a Secularist to prove a premise to be true. All Secularists can do is to hide the fact that they have no basis for thought. This is then called “science.”

Yet, we see many advances that are based on science. We see phones, cars, airplanes, and many other things. How can this be? Doesn’t this prove that Secularists can base thoughts on assumptions and find out things that are true and that work? No. It doesn’t prove any such thing. Let me explain.

Many years ago, God revealed the scientific method to scientists who were following Christ. They gave glory to God and discovered many things. Other scientists, who weren’t following Christ, were also able to use scientific method. God has revealed many things to humanity through scientific method. Revelation is true. The Secularist refuses to acknowledge God or to thank Him, so the Secularist can’t tell the difference between reality that has been revealed and fantasy that has been made up. Secularists can do science. They think that the many revelations that God has given, which make science possible, are simply assumptions. They call these revelations, “axioms.” Given these “axioms of science,” God reveals many things to Secularists using the scientific method. However, Secularists also tried to apply scientific method to things that can’t be observed, such as the past or the spiritual realm. As soon as the Secularists did this, the role of interpretation became much larger and the role of observation became much smaller. They distorted and misused the scientific method that God had revealed.

When checking to see if a certain engine design works well, interpretation plays a small role while repeated experimentation and observations plays a huge role. When calculating the age of the Earth, observations play a small role and interpretation determines the answer. The role of interpretation becomes huge. Those scientists who say the Earth is young and those scientists who say the Earth is millions or billions of years old are all observing the same things. The only difference is in interpretation. The Secularist intellect’s interpretation may contain some revelation, but it also contains speculation, which is made-up stuff. Some defend the use of assumptions using many irrational arguments. Some try to hide the fact that the entire thought-process is a house built on sand without a foundation.

There have been scientists who have given God the glory. In the process, they invited the Holy Spirit to be involved in their work. They asked Him to explain the things they were observing. As a result, many wonderful strides were made in science. No benefit has ever been gained through speculations about the past or speculations about the spiritual realm. God has, in His great mercy, revealed many things to scientists who were hindered by their worldviews and speculations. They weren’t granted those discoveries because of their speculations but in spite of their speculations.

In closing, let me say that the same principles apply in theology. Theologians can oppose each other fiercely while quoting from the Bible. The differences lie in the interpretations of Scripture. (pun intended) There are two ways to interpret Scripture. One is to allow the Holy Spirit to interpret it and to guide and to teach you. The other is to speculate. The human mind doesn’t have the ability to know the difference between reality (revelation) and fantasy (made-up stuff). This is actually the difference between good and evil. (Hebrews 5:14) The person who continually holds loosely to his or her theology and asks the Holy Spirit to reveal those beliefs that are false and to reveal the truth–that person who so humbles himself or herself will receive ongoing unfolding revelation of God’s will and of God’s knowledge. Since God is infinite and we are finite, this ongoing revelation is going to continue. We, as humans, must resist the urge to declare that our doctrine is the correct one. We must rather be open to the correcting influence of the Holy Spirit.

God Speaks Many Ways

GodSpeaks

Rationalism is make-believe. The human mind can’t really self-generate knowledge without the benefit of observation or Divine revelation. There’s a difference between reality and make-believe. Rationalizing blurs the difference.

When looking at things in the present, there are two ways to try to know how they got the way that they are. One is rationalism. The other is Divine revelation. Rationalism can go anywhere. Divine revelation is restricted to what God is saying. Faith (certainty of belief) comes by hearing and hearing by the rhema of God. “Rhema” is a Greek word that means “utterance.” God speaks through Scripture and through every means mentioned in Scripture. Our part is to acknowledge Him. When He speaks, certainty comes regarding whatever He said. As soon as we add anything to what God said or take anything from what God said, we are rationalizing, and our thoughts are based on vapor.

Soon to be released: “Reason,” a book about the basis of thought and how to be rational.

False Objectivity

Christians and unbelievers alike often are deceived into thinking that they can be objective. It’s known as the ontic fallacy. Often, Christians state theological views and declare them to be Scripture. Often, scientists state theological or philosophical views and declare them to be scientific observations or evidence. They are not. They are interpretations. Interpretations add information to what can be known. God speaks through Scripture and through His Creation. Assumptions always add to His Words. Human interpretations always add to His Words.

Anyone who’s concerned about reality should realize that nothing can be known if it’s dependent on even a single assumption. In fact, if you allow yourself even one assumption, you can prove anything to yourself.

Knowledge of reality requires a true premise. Without Divine revelation, how can you know that a premise is true? With another premise? How can you know that premise is true? It isn’t rational to keep making up premises that need other premises that remain unknown. Yet, that’s what people do. Then, they claim that they’ve proved something or done science.

Knowing reality requires a true premise, but you can’t possibly have a true premise without Divine revelation. Now, the skeptic will claim to have infinite knowledge by making the bare assertion that Divine revelation isn’t known either. By doing this, the skeptic is claiming to know the inner spiritual experience of every person who has ever lived. That’s an amazing claim.

Every person who follows Christ is led and taught by Christ. While we are still learning to discern His Voice from all the other voices in the world, including the voice of the self, we are making progress in those things where we respond in submission to the Holy Spirit. Without this, there would be no hope of ever knowing the difference between reality and make-believe. A rational person wants to know the difference between reality and make-believe. A rational person realizes that assumptions can never be a basis for knowing.

The problem is not reason versus Scripture or reason versus Divine revelation. The problem is the foundation of reason, including the interpretation of Scripture. Only one Foundation will work: Jesus Christ. He gives a basis for reason through the teaching and leading of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit speaks to us through Scripture if we are willing to acknowledge Him. If we are walking in the Spirit, then we are learning to discern His Voice from all the other voices and to respond to Him in submission. We are allowing Him to think His thoughts, speak His words, and do His works through us.
