Fake, make-believe reason takes many forms. All these forms have a common trait. That trait is that the reason is based on make-believe. The reason is based on made-up stuff. The reason uses mind tricks to make made-up stuff seem real.
Atheist: One of the courses I took in college was logic. It’s this simple; either the premises equal the conclusion or not.
Christian: College logic classes generally fail because they teach logic in the way you mentioned. They fail to say that sound logic also requires a true premise. They tend to teach that it’s OK to base logic on made-up stuff. The reason they go that route is that all ungodly logic is always based on made-up stuff. The human mind has no way to reason to a true premise.
True logic starts with true premises. Without Christ, the human mind has no path to a true premise. Without faith, the human mind has no path to a true premise. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the rhema/utterance of God. Jesus Christ is the Author and Finisher of our faith.
He speaks. He leads. He teaches. He corrects. He shows us that the Bible is His word without error. He shows us that the history in the Bible is accurate. All who say that the Bible has errors or is inaccurate are basing their claim on made-up stuff. Christ speaks to us through Scripture and every means mentioned in Scripture.
Let’s look at two excerpts from Real Faith & Reason Library. The first one is from Reason, Continuing the Journey. This book refutes the ways ungodly thinkers defend the practice of basing reason on made-up stuff. It also refutes the ways ungodly thinkers reject the practice of basing reason on truth that comes from Christ. This excerpt refutes the ungodly argument that confuses pseudo-truth with truth.
The second excerpt is from the Encyclopedia of Logical Fallacies. This excerpt explains the same fallacy and supplies some additional information.
I Can Make a True Statement Argument
If I can make a true statement without knowing Christ, that proves that human beings can conjure up knowledge without the benefit of either divine revelation or observation. Here’s a true statement: boys will be boys. Here’s another: God either exists or He doesn’t. You would agree that both of those are true. Therefore, I have proved that human beings can conjure up knowledge without the benefit of either divine revelation or observation.
I can state a tautology, a piece of logic that’s true by its form. That means that my mind is capable of manufacturing truth.
This argument proves no such thing. A tautology doesn’t say anything. An example would be “A=A” or “I am myself.” Whoever brought this argument defending the human mind’s supposed ability to manufacture truth is confusing pseudo-truth with truth. God reveals truth to every person. All the laws of logic that are true laws of logic come from God. However, not everyone receives every law of logic that God reveals.
Some people disagree, for instance, on the law of non-contradiction. Others don’t agree with the law of cause and effect. Both come from God.
The two statements that this ungodly thinker made are true because of the laws of logic. “Boys will be boys.” “A house is a house.” “A car is a car.” “God either exists or He doesn’t.” “A statement is either true or not true.” These are all true statements by formula. What would life be like if statements like these were all that the human mind could conjure up? They are statements that don’t say anything but that are true because of the laws of logic. The ungodly thinker has no way to definitively know that the laws of logic are true laws of logic.
The fact that two people can agree on a certain thing (such as the laws of logic) doesn’t make that thing true. The fact that an ungodly thinker can parrot something that follows truth doesn’t mean that that the ungodly thinker is thinking rationally. An atheist actor can pretend to follow Christ for a big paycheck, but that doesn’t help the atheist actor. At this point, it may seem difficult to follow the ungodly argument. Ungodliness causes confusion. Here’s an example from another discussion group:
The three laws of logic are The Law of Identity, The Law of the Excluded Middle, and The Law of Non-Contradiction. The Law of Identity states that anything is itself. In other words, A = A. Tautologies follow the first law, and assert that something is either A, or not-A. The final law follows the second, and posits that nothing can be both A and not-A simultaneously. These laws are self-evident because they exist to prove themselves.
Notice the final statement in this argument. The final statement is a circular reasoning fallacy. We don’t know the person who developed this argument, but we could ask such a person whether God proves Himself. People who degenerate to so-called “self-evident” arguments about inanimate entities that supposedly “prove themselves” also have rejected the Almighty Creator Who reveals Himself to them. By the way, Good reveals that these three laws are true. The laws don’t have power within themselves to reveal that the laws are true.
Confusing Pseudo-Truth with Truth Fallacy
(a.k.a. Confusing Mathematical Truth with Truth, Confusing Logical Truths with Truth, Confusing what is True by Definition with Truth, Confusing Personal Truth with Truth, Confusing Analytical Truth with Truth, or Confusing Tautologies with Truth)
Thinking that something that’s called truth is actual truth just because it’s called truth
Types of Pseudo Truth
- Semantic Truth
- Logical Truths
- what is True
- Personal Truth
- Analytic Truth
The human mind is able to manufacture truth without the benefit of either divine revelation or observation. Let me show you how I, as an atheist, can do this. I’ll just make the following true statement: God either exists or He doesn’t. That statement is true. I just manufactured truth without divine revelation or observation.
The statement doesn’t say anything. What can we do with it? What a life this person would lead. He would say, “My car either exists or doesn’t exist.” “I either live at my address or I don’t.” “I either am a computer programmer or I’m not.”
However, he doesn’t limit himself. He uses the irrational claim above to justify making up stuff and calling the made-up stuff true. From that made-up stuff, he concludes that God doesn’t reveal Himself to anyone, that socialism is the way society should be run, that all Christians should be rounded up and exterminated, and that the stories of evolutionism are true. He also concludes that his claim, the one we just quoted, is rational. And, based on the made-up stuff by which he concludes that his claim is rational, he also concludes that he can make up stuff and the made-up stuff is true.
Of course I can reason rationally without a premise that I’ve proved true. My mind is able to determine the truth without divine revelation or observation. Watch me make a true statement without either of those. My wife is my wife. That’s true, isn’t it? Here’s another one. I am who I am. I can create mathematical truth tables. That’s all about truth. Also, if I define science to mean the scientific method, whatever we learn using the scientific method, and the current opinion of the scientific establishment. Given this definition of science, the stories of evolutionism are science. Here’s another one. All bachelors are unmarried.
Of those statements that are called “true,” not one is the truth. Some are rhetoric that doesn’t prove anything. What is true by definition doesn’t prove anything since definitions don’t prove anything. Definitions just make sure that we know what someone means when that person uses a certain word.
My personal truth is that I live life free from the restrictions of any God since my personal truth eliminates God.
In my personal truth, there is no such thing as right and wrong. Those are just constructs of society.
In my reality, I’m a unicorn living on the planet Elmo just past the North Star.
From these examples, we can see that placing the label “truth” on something doesn’t make it truth. Truth, by our definition, is precise and absolutely certain reality.
