Non-Biblical Orders in the Modern Church
THE MODERN CHURCH often follows models like corporations, performance platforms, or personality-driven leadership. Many Christian leaders are tied to the current system because of considerations of money, power, and prestige. The pastor becomes the center. The Pastor becomes a CEO, an entrepreneur, an entertainer, an employee, or a king. Churches might even have a board of directors that works by majority rule and politicking for decisions. But in Scripture, leadership looks very different.
Acts 14:23 says Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.
Notice the elders were appointed by apostles, with more than one elder in each church. Scripture never mentions a chief elder. In the New Testament, “elder” and “bishop” or “overseer” are the same role. In the early 2nd century, they begin to separate.
The earliest clear change shows up in the writings of Ignatius of Antioch around 107 AD, with one bishop (singular), A group of elders called presbyters under him, and Deacons as mere assistants.
