The Church Moved Away From God’s Ways
The Church moved away from God’s orders to what some men reasoned was a good way to do it. By the mid–2nd century, one “bishop” over a city became the norm. That was the beginning of what later became the “chief pastor” idea. Some speculate that this change came as an attempt to guard against false teaching and provide authority when groups like Gnostics spread competing doctrines.
