RATIONALISM IS IRRATIONAL
Rationalizing is irrational, but it has the word rational in it, so some people get confused. To rationalize is to think irrationally but to convince yourself or others that you are thinking rationally. The thing that makes rationalizing irrational is that it’s always based on at least one assumption. A chain of thought is only as strong as its weakest link. Rationalism assumes that the human mind can reason to truth, but the human mind can’t reason to truth. Sometimes, rationalizing is given nice names like common sense or reason.
Let’s quickly go through some of the other nice names given to irrational rationalizing. It’s a long list: Critical thinking, Independent thinking, Free thinking, Open-mindedness , Follow the evidence, Trust the science, Data-driven thinking, Evidence-based conclusions, Human reason, Using your brain, Logical thinking, Analytical thinking, Think for yourself, Personal truth, My understanding, Self-guided belief, Intellectual honesty, Intellectual integrity, Being realistic, Being reasonable, Being sensible , Enlightened thinking, Modern thinking, Scholarly consensus, Academic rigor, Discernment, Wisdom, Inner guidance, and Following your heart. To know the truth, you would need to know a Person Who knows ALL things and Who can’t lie.
