Righteousness means God directs the work and does the work. If you direct the work, it’s self-righteousness. Your work might be working directly against what God wants. You aren’t doing God’s will. You’re doing your will.

Righteousness means God directs and does the work. If you direct the work, it’s self-righteousness. Your ideas won’t make the cut. God doesn’t need your ideas. He knows what’s needed. You can’t do God’s will without faith. Without faith, you’re doing your will. After receiving God’s leading, if you try in your own effort to obey God’s leading, it’s self-righteousness. You need to yield yourself to the Holy Spirit and allow the power of Grace to do the work through you. Righteousness is a gift from God to you. Righteousness isn’t a gift from you to God.

Rain down, you heavens, from above, And let the skies pour down righteousness; Let the earth open, let them bring forth salvation, And let righteousness spring up together. I, the LORD, have created it. ~ Isaiah 45:8

You’re not saved by righteousness. You’re saved to righteousness. Righteousness is part of your salvation. You’re not saved to sin. You’re saved from sin. And you aren’t only saved from sin, but God has more for you. God saves you from sin, death, and the power of the devil. When He saves you from sin, He saves you from the consequences of sin. He wants to save you to holiness and completeness. Both righteousness and holiness are gifts God gives you.
