Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation, but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For example, your fleshly nature may be trying to draw you into sin. It tells you lies. It tells you to do things you shouldn’t do. Then, the Holy Spirit brings a memory to your mind. It may be some truth from a Bible teacher you heard long ago. It might be a verse of Scripture like this:

So you too must count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires. ~ Romans 6:11-12

It might be this verse:

God may bring a word you heard long ago in a church service. You don’t remember anything about the church service. And yet, the Holy Spirit brings a word of truth from that service to your mind. The Holy Spirit may speak to you this way:

That’s your flesh lying to you. You don’t have to do it. You don’t owe anything to your flesh. Listen to Christ and walk in His righteousness.
