Concepts Are NOT Part of Reality

Let’s look at this simple difference between concept and reality. Concepts are chains of thought based on a mix of the following elements:
 
observation (optional)
revelation (optional)
making up stuff (required)
 
Since we always put some made-up stuff into our concepts, the made-up stuff is what makes a concept a concept. A chain of thought is as strong as its weakest link, so concepts aren’t substance.
 
Concepts come in two basic flavors:
 
human interpretations of what exists
human imagination totally outside of what exists

Everyone Loses Touch with Reality Sometimes

Everyone loses touch sometimes. We think something is true, and then we find out that it’s false, or we think something is false, and then we find out that it’s true. Insanity happens two ways. We might think that something real is a concept or made-up stuff, which is the fallacy of anti-concreteness. We might think that made-up stuff or a concept is real, which is the fallacy of hypostatization. Anti-concreteness treats substance as made-up stuff. What we objectively observe is substance. Our interpretation of what we observe is made-up stuff. Divine revelation is substance, but our interpretation of revelation is made-up stuff. Faith is substance. God is substance. Jesus Christ is substance. The Creation event and the Genesis Flood are substance. On the other hand, theologies about God, Jesus Christ, Faith, the Creation event, or the Genesis Flood are all concepts.

Concept isn’t reality, but substance is reality.

Theologies, political philosophies, the stories of evolution, old-earth calculations, and stories about a big bang aren’t reality. Rather, these are concepts. Molecules to humanity, naturalism, materialism, abiogenesis, and uniformitarianism are concepts. Concepts are human-generated fabrications. They’re usually about reality, but they aren’t reality. Concepts float over reality. They add to reality or eliminate parts of reality. Just as children’s make-believe is usually about reality but not reality itself, concepts are about reality, but they aren’t reality itself. If we think concepts are real, we commit hypostatization. The material world is substance, not concept. Revelation and faith aren’t concepts because they’re imparted by God when He speaks. And we know that Jesus Christ is part of reality because we know Him and He reveals Himself to us. As another example, God reveals the Creation event and the Genesis Flood when He speaks to us through Scripture, so the Creation event and the Genesis Flood are parts of reality even though they’re separated from us by time

On the other hand, theories, philosophies, and theologies are mental constructs. They grow out of assumptions, stories, conceptual frameworks, ideas, or other forms of made-up stuff. Assuming and storytelling are ways of making up stuff.

Atheist: I Was Raised Christian

Teach the Children

Children Need Two Types of Learning

Ephesians 6:4 speaks of two forms of training. One is nouthesia, which is “putting in mind.” What does God want the children to have in their minds? God wants them to acknowledge Him, and He’ll be there to guide if they’re willing to acknowledge Him, that is, hold Him in their knowledge. The second form of training is paideia, which is action. To understand this paideia action, we must remember that works come by grace through faith, so children need to learn how to acknowledge God’s leading and how to respond in submission. They need to learn how to yield to the Holy Spirit, so God does His works through them.

What If Children Knew How to Listen to God?

Teach your children to know Jesus. Teach them to be led by the Holy Spirit and to reject the influence of the world, the devil, and their own fallen emotions and mind.

Children Need

They need to experience the Holy Spirit applying Scripture to their current problems and situations in a relevant way. That is, parents can show children how Christ speaks to them, through Scripture, about right and wrong. Through Scripture, parents can teach their children how to detect a false prophet or a false teacher. They can teach them to pray for discernment to find God’s interpretation of Scripture amid all the various voices who claim to have the correct interpretation.

Children Need to Know Christ Personally

Parents are responsible for teaching, encouraging, and building up their own children before witnessing to anyone else. Parents may focus on teaching doctrine, morals, ethics, forms, rituals, or other less important truths. When children are too young to understand, parents put children under a law. But that’s a temporary measure to keep the children safe. The goal isn’t a law or God’s Law, and learning speculative theories or theologies isn’t vital to the children’s walk with God either. Nor do they need to learn loyalty to an organization.
 
Instead, children need to learn to know Jesus. That is, they need to learn how to go to Jesus in every moment and listen to Him, and as part of this, they need the moment-by-moment training and instruction of the Lord.
